This system is also referred to as lithium/bromine-complexed thionyl chloride (Li/BCX). The addition of BrCl to the electrolyte leads to a higher open circuit voltage. However, the higher load voltage is lost as BrCl is consumed during the first 10% to 20% of discharging. This 300 mV higher voltage at the beginning of discharging may be unacceptable in certain equipment. The addition of BrCl is considered to make the cells less hazardous under abusive conditions.
